Bis 1930 hatte Henri Matisse (1869–1954) ein bedeutendes internationales Ansehen erlangt, befand sich jedoch in einem tiefen kreativen Einbruch. Der Wendepunkt kam im Herbst dieses Jahres mit dem Auftrag, die Hauptgalerie der Barnes Foundation zu dekorieren, die sich damals in einem Vorort von Philadelphia befand. Das daraus resultierende monumentale Wandbild „Der Tanz“ (1930–1933) veränderte Matisses künstlerische Praxis völlig (→ Henri Matisse: Biografie).

Die Ausstellung „Matisse in den 1930ern“ untersucht Veränderungen in der Arbeit des französischen Künstlers in verschiedenen Formaten, darunter Staffeleibilder und dekorative Malerei, Skulptur, Druckgrafik, Zeichnung und das illustrierte Buch. Die Ausstellung thematisiert auch die Arbeitsweisen, die Matisses Stil erneuert haben, sowie seine modernen Wiedergaben mythologischer Themen aus der Antike, seine Darstellungen weiblicher Modelle im Atelier und seine Partnerschaft mit seiner Studioleiterin und seinem Model Lydia Delectorskaya.
Die Ausstellung wird organisiert vom Philadelphia Museum of Art, dem Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris und dem Musée Matisse Nizza.
