Wer ist Steve McQueen?

Steve McQueen (* 9.10.1969, West London) ist ein britischer Filmkünstler und Regisseur. Er vertrat Großbritannien 2009 auf der Biennale von Venedig. 2014 gewann er mehrere Oscars für sein Filmdrama „12 Years a Slave“.

Der Turner Prize Gewinner von 1999 ist mit zahlreichen Preisen und Auszeichnungen geehrt. 2020 schlug Queen Elizabeth II. den Künstler zum Ritter: Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE)

Steve McQueen lebt und arbeitet in London und Amsterdam.

Ausbildung

Der 1969 in London geborene Steve McQueen begann seine Ausbildung 1990 an der Chelsea School of Art, London. Nach drei Jahren wechselte er an das Goldsmith’s College, London (1993), und 1994 an die Tisch School of the Arts der New York University in New York. 1994 nahm Steve McQueens an einer ersten Gruppenausstellung teil: „Acting Out: The Body in Video: Then and Now“ am Royal College of Art, London. 1999 war er sowohl Stipendiat des DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) und gewann für „Deadpan“ (1997), „Current“ (1999) und „Prey“ (1999), ein-Kanal-Video-Arbeiten und Installationen, den Turner Prize.

Werke

Schon zu Beginn seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn erlangte McQueen den Ruf, zum Nachdenken anregende, einfühlsame und poetische Werke im Bereich der zeitgenössischen Film- und Videokunst zu produzieren. Von Mitte bis Ende der 1990er Jahre schuf er Ein-Kanal-Videos, meist in schwarz-weiß und ohne Sound. Sie wurden mit sparsamen Mitteln gemacht, oft unter Verwendung des eigenen Körpers des Künstlers. Im Laufe seiner Karriere erweiterte Steve McQueen die Möglichkeiten der Kamera und des Objektivs als Apparat des Sehens und Erlebens. Seine experimentellen Arbeiten nutzen ungewöhnliche und überraschende Kameraperspektiven, komplexe Blickwinkel und kontrastreiche Bilder sowie die Darstellung von mehrdeutigen Handlungen. Viele der Filmarbeiten von Steve McQueen sind auf Super 8mm gedreht, da der Künstler die Körnung, die Textur liebt.

Preise und Auszeichnungen

1999 gewann Steve McQueen den Turner-Preis. Ihm wurde der Titel eines Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) im Jahr 2002, eines Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) im Jahr 2011 und 2019 des Knights für Verdienste um die bildende Kunst in Großbritannien zuteil. 2009 vertrat er Großbritannien auf der Biennale in Venedig und war 2003 als offizieller Kriegskünstler tätig, woraus das monumentale Werk „Queen and Country“ (2007–2010) hervorging. 2008 gewann Steve McQueen außerdem die BAFTA für herausragendes Debüt eines britischen Regisseurs und den Camera d'Or-Preis bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes für „Hunger“. Die Liste der Auszeichnungen wird gekrönt vom Oscar für den besten Film 2014 für „12 Years a Slave“.
